Sixth Form Life

At Woodbridge High School Sixth Form we aim to provide students with opportunities to grow as individuals and experience things that they may not normally choose or have the opportunity to do. Students in the Sixth Form work in a more adult environment than is possible in the rest of the school.

They are given more freedom, but within a structured framework, so that they learn how to handle it in readiness for the much greater responsibilities they will face when they leave school. 

Ethos
 

Woodbridge Sixth Form is a diverse community of students from many different cultures and backgrounds, learning and working together in an atmosphere of trust and mutual respect.

We have an ethos that encourages our students to aspire beyond their own expectations of what is possible. The Sixth Form is a stepping stone to employment or higher education and we try to engender an ethos of respect and responsibility. Sixth Formers are however part of the whole school community and as such we expect them to support staff and act as role models at all times.

We have a dress code which requires students to wear what is appropriate for a working environment. We see our Sixth Formers as ambassadors for Woodbridge at all times, both in and out of school. All Sixth form students are expected to be involved in the life of the school and take on a range of responsibilities.

Our Sixth Form prefects work alongside teachers in the classroom, mentor younger students and organise extra-curricular activities. They represent the school and various functions and occasions.

Attendance 

Student attendance will be monitored as follows:

Lessons

The expectation is that all students achieve at least 95% attendance to all their lessons. This will be reviewed regularly through the tutorial programme by tutors. Subject staff will also review and monitor attendance according to the sixth form intervention policy (see section on ‘Academic Monitoring’).

Assemblies

Attendance to every assembly is compulsory in the sixth form. All assemblies will take place in Wynndale Hall every Tuesday morning at 8.40am. Tutors will take a register and monitor absences. No tutorial interviews will take place on a Tuesday morning.

Enrichment

The enrichment programme is in the form of a timetabled lesson. Attendance to this is therefore compulsory.

Independant Learning 

Sixth Form students have a varying number of study periods. Sixth form students are expected to organise and manage their study time outside of their timetabled lessons. Evidence shows that only hard work can secure success on all courses. 

The Tutorial Programme
 

All students in the Sixth form have a personal tutor with whom they have a one-to-one meeting each fortnight to support their learning. Tutors monitor students' personal and academic progress. The tutorial programme is structured around a series of themes, which are appropriate for key phases during the academic year. 

Academic Monitoring 

The academic progress of all students is our priority. We are committed to ensuring that we review students’ progress regularly and provide feedback to both students and parents.

At the beginning of each year we use students’ GCSE performance to assess their potential at post 16. This will be in the form of an ALPS target grade. This grade is the minimum grade which students should be achieving at A Level. It therefore represents the minimum academic standard to which students should be working towards.

During the year, we will be assessing student progress at regular intervals and comparing it to their ALPS target grade. All students will receive a predicted grade for their current level of work. A predicted grade is the grade which staff predict students will achieve at the end of the course.

At Woodbridge High School Sixth Form we have intervention systems in place to target those students who may not be achieving their potential and meeting the minimum academic standards expected of them in one or more subjects.

Communication 

In the absence of morning and afternoon registration, it is essential that we use alternative forms of communicating with students and parents.

The main forms of communication will be as follows:

Email

All students and parents must ensure the school has an email address (which is regularly checked) on its database. Tutors and subject staff will be using this form of communication regularly.

Weekly Briefings

There will be a weekly briefing emailed to parents and students every Tuesday. This will have regular updates on specific events, dates and deadlines for the sixth form.

Information Screens

There are three information screens in the Sixth Form area for students to view. These will be updated regularly to show key dates / deadlines and other important whole school information.

Notice boards

There are a number of notice boards in the Sixth Form area displaying a wide range of information for students.

Sixth Form Space 

The Sixth Form area provides two private study rooms for independent work.

Sixth Form Private Study Room 1 is a silent study room, with individual study carrels. The expectation is that students use this room for quiet, independent work.

Private Study Room 2 is a smaller room which is available for group / paired work.

There is also a Sixth Form common room for use during free time, with a full café service throughout the day exclusively for Sixth Form use.

Community Service 

Today’s society places huge demands on our young people. In order to meet these expectations students must recognise the importance of being able to demonstrate transferable and life skills as well as academic success.

Here at Woodbridge High School sixth form, we have established a community service programme, which provides students with opportunities to make a positive contribution to the life of the school and local community. This includes helping members of teaching staff in department areas, working with local primary schools, managing pupil events as well as fundraising activities.

Students in Year 12 are encouraged to sign up and complete the 18 month Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award which can be completed by both students who have taken part in previous Duke of Edinburgh programmes and those pupils who have not.

Passport to Success

All pupils in Year 12 are given a ‘Passport to Success’. This is an enrichment log in which students reflect on their skills and ways in which they can build further skills through community service. Pupils work through this passport throughout the year with their form tutors and the passport aims to support students when they choose to make job / apprenticeship / university applications. 

Enrichment 

The enrichment programme is provided for all students. It is a timetabled lesson and compulsory for all students to attend.

The programme is designed to enhance the students’ curriculum by introducing students to a variety of experiences.

The Enrichment Programme includes:

  • Alumni Fairs- showcasing different University destinations

  • UCAS workshops for year12
  • UKCAT/BMAT/STEP practice sessions
