Staying Positive Workshops

Are you aged 12-25 years old and have a long-term health condition?

Finding it hard to talk to your familyor friends about your condition or

feel like your condition is holding you back

Are you up for meeting other young people andhaving fun?

Staying Positive is a self management programme for young people aged 12 to 18 who are living with a long-term health condition. The project has been developed by young peoplewith a condition, for young people with a condition.

Basically, it involves a series of three one-day workshops to give you more skills to manage your condition. When we talk about ‘managing your condition’, we mean
  • How medication affects your life
  • How you can exercise safely and keep it fun
  • Keeping up with school work and getting the career you want
  • Coping with the move from Children’s Health Services to Adults Health Services
  • What you do when you are fed up and feeling down
  • How your condition affects getting a boyfriend or girlfriend or how your condition affects puberty (depending on your age)

We have trained young people aged 14-25 who are themselves living with a condition to run workshops. On the workshops (which always happen on a weekend or school holiday) we give you a chance to share your experiences with others in similar circumstances and always include a fun activity at the end of each workshop to give you a chance to chill out together and make new friends. This could be anything from African drumming to photography!

Whether your condition is epilepsy, diabetes, asthma, juvenile arthritis, sickle cell, ME, Crohns, or cerebral palsy then these workshops are for you. Don’t worry if your condition isn’t listed above, get in touch with Staying Positive to find out more and sign up.

Once you’ve been on a workshop, you also get the opportunity to become a young facilitator. To prepare you, we give you a few days away in a four star hotel (we cover all travel accommodation and meal costs) and give you all the training and materials you need to deliver the workshops to other young people so you get loads of experience you can use to apply for college, university or a job.

After you’ve delivered your first workshop, we even give you £40 for every workshopyou help us run to thank you

The next young facilitator training will happen between the 15th and 18th April 2009. If you are interested in facilitating workshops then get in touch with the project as there are still a few places left on this training course. Otherwise, the next workshops in Redbridge will take place on Saturday 6th June, Saturday 27th June, and Saturday 18th July in a local venue.
